Driving with light during daytime – Survey 2017/2018
Today in European countries driving with light during daytime is already allowed or even mandatory for car drivers. The main aim of this regulation is to reduce the number of traffic accidents in general and to reduce the number of killed and injured drivers and passengers. For this reason the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) released a recommendation in October 2005 that asks drivers in Germany to use their car lights also during daytime. To check the achievement of this recommendation and to evaluate the improvement of road safety, the rate of drivers using lights during daytime was investigated in a first survey in 2007/2008. Since then the survey has been repeated at regular intervals to document the development of the rate of vehicles using lights during daytime. The present report describes the current survey and presents the results for the rate of vehicles using lights during daytime for 2017/2018. The comparison between the results of the previous surveys and the current one shows that the rate of vehicles using lights during daytime has increased on all road types.
