Demonstration, Investigation and Reference Area of the BASt

One of BASt’s main tasks is to create the conditions required to prepare German roads for the challenges arising for the future from increased freight traffic, climate change, the energy transition, resource scarcity etc. The objective is to be able to build and operate a safe, reliable, low-emission and sustainable road infrastructure. The new duraBASt is an essential test facility when pursuing this objective.

Driving Simulator

With a driving simulator, driving tests can be made in a virtual environment. The Federal Highway Research Institute performs various studies with the driving simulator, for example, on the impact of age, illness, fatigue, distraction or psychoactive substances on the driver.

Dynamic Full Scale Pavement Test Facilities

Two large indoor full scale pavement test facilities have been set up by the Federal Highway Research Institute for dynamic testing of entire pavement structures as well as individual material characteristics under defined boundary conditions. These test facilities enable the execution of dynamic accelerated load tests to assess the bearing capacity and the mechanical performance of different pavement structures with different materials.

Facility for Active Vehicle Safety and Driver Assistance

Vehicles require periodical technical inspection (PTI) for safety and environmental reasons. BASt has installed a complete test facility in one of its test halls to handle scientific research projects relating to this issue.

Lab for Acoustic Scale Model Technology

To reduce costs, traffic obstructions and lengthy examinations BASt uses this lab for investigations and measurements using models of the traffic structures and the residential structures surrounding them which are as little as a twentieth of the original size.

Light Hall

For technical testing and inspection of lighting systems BASt uses its 70-meter-long and 12-meter-high, completely dark light hall.

Our road network contains a large number of engineering structures: tunnels, bridges, supporting structures or openings. They are exposed to many different impacts during their useful life.

Mobile Load Simulator MLS30

Accelerated Pavement Test (APT) facilities are being established around the world for the execution of accelerated and realistic load tests on pavement structures. In most cases, these tests are being conducted through the use of a rolling wheel load for load application.

Model tunnel

Since 2016, the model tunnel at BASt has provided a tool with which even complex tunnel geometries can be simulated at a scale of 1:18 and can be examined with respect to ventilation issues.

Turntable Road-Marking Test System

For time-saving examinations of road markings under the same boundary conditions BASt uses the RPA. The test duration depends on the subsequent intended use for the relevant road marking system. Thus, road marking systems for brief, temporary use are subject to only 100,000 wheel roll-over cycles and marking systems for long-term use are subject to up to 4 million wheel roll-over cycles. On average, approximately 150 different marking systems can be tested in one year.

Vehicle Engineering Test Facility - Crash Test Facility

BASt’s crash test facility is used for scientific findings of active and passive vehicle safety. Furthermore BASt is an Euro NCAP accredited test laboratory, where all types of EURO NCAP crash tests (frontal, side and pole impact as well as whiplash) are performed.

Vehicle Engineering Test Facility - Driving Dynamics Test Area

The Vehicle Engineering Test Facility (FTVA) of BASt includes an outside proving ground that is used for testing of vehicle safety, tyre/pavement issues and the safety of road equipment components.

Vehicle-Pavement Interaction Facility

To examine noise generated by interaction between tyres and pavement texture under laboratory conditions and high speed and durability testing of tyres and rolling resistance measurements of tyres the vehicle-pavement interaction facility was established at the Federal Highway Research Institute.
