Tasks
The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) is the practically oriented, technical and scientific institution of the federal government in the area of road research. It is dedicated to the various problems that occur in relations between roads, human beings and the environment.
About 400 employees work in the central department and the five technical departments, including about 200 scientists of different disciplines: engineers, physicists, geologists, biologists, chemical experts, computer scientists and mathematicians, economists and business managers, lawyers, physicians, pedagogues, sociologists and psychologists.
BASt presents the results of about 200 research projects annually, that are published in series and on the Internet. Approximately half of these are researched by external specialists from universities and engineering firms in particular. About eight million Euros are spent on this external research per year. Apart from this, BASt prepares approximately 1,000 statements for the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development as well as third parties and works on around 800 test assignments.
